I have found many bikes that look appealing to me, but they have some bad reviews, I need a great bike that is under $200 that will perform good on street and dirt. Hopefully someting good for jumping and not too much needed work in a shop. If you can, something with fire shifters…. PLEASE HELP. Ten Points for the best bike!
1) Avoid all bikes from discount stores (e.g. Walmart/Target). They are junk and won’t last very long. They also break easily and because they are made with inferior parts, difficult to repair.
2) Your budget is a serious problem for new bikes. Even basic mountain bikes start at about $300-400 new. A good mountain bike can cost $1,000-2,000 or even more new. So you shouldn’t be looking at new bikes.
3) With your budget, you will need to look for a mountain bike which is several years old. Make sure it’s a name brand bike, not a knockoff or used bike from a discount store. Specific models won’t matter, since it depends on what you can find near you. Look for a bike which is still in good shape or which you are willing to fix up yourself. You might be lucky and find a steal at a local thrift shop, or perhaps a used bike shop. Also look on ebay or Craigslist for bikes in your area. Good luck.
4) If you want fire shifters, consider purchasing them new and putting them on your bike yourself. That way, you can get a good used bike and still have the shifters that you want.
How much money should I invest in mountain biking?

I want to start mountain biking and don’t know too much about it. Should I buy and expensive bike from a bike shop or go to a retail store and buy what looks okay to ride?
I think you can look forward for a 300 to 400 hardtail (bike with only front suspension), and maybe 100 bucks in gear (helmet, gloves and maybe a camelback or backpack hidration gear).
Go to a bike shop, they know more their stuff than a retail shop. It will really make a difference. Most retail stores salesman (not all of them, but most of them, I think) will try to sell you what they have on the floor, rather than showing you a well fitting bike.
Trek, Specialized, Giant, GT makes very good entry bikes. Don’t worry too much about componentry for now. Shimano has different ‘quality’ stuff, the food chain is as follows, from lowest to most expensive: Altus, Acera, Alivio, Deore, LX, XT and XTR. It also has some stuff with numbers. Anything from Alivio and up is very workable, Altus and Acera, will do but probably you will need to upgrade in the future.
Unless you do freeriding (jumps and realy crazy stuff), V brakes are probably your best bet. Some cheap bikes have disc brakes, but probably not worth it and only will make your bike heavier.
Also, ask in the shops if they have begginer clinics and group rides. Some shops do offer them, and they’re a great way to start and learn the basic stuff. It’s better to start riding with the right bases, than trying to learn everything by yourself, and then try to correct bad habits.
Good luck!
Do mountain bikes really need dual disc brakes?
Author: admin
I saw a couple of mountain bikes with dual disc brakes. Is it really necessary. My 100cc motorcycle had no disc brake and even my 450cc motorcycle only had front disc brake. Even new small size motorcycles don’t have dual disc brakes.
They are necessary for any bike that will be ridden on serious terrain… but not for the reason you’re assuming. It’s not that they need more braking power but rather the only alternative is rim brakes. On a mountain bike, it’s not at all uncommon for rims to bend or come out of true from the beating they take. A bent rim with rim brakes means you now have diminished braking abilties… with a disc system, it’s nothing to worry about.
Motorcycles used drum brakes rather than rim brakes because weight isnt as important. A drum big enough to not overheat would simply be too heavy for a mountain bike.
What circumfrence inch wheels do road bikes have?
Author: admin
I cant be bothered to measure mine. Racing Bike kind of road bike, as in bicycle bike not motorbike. A standard road racing bike.
Don’t measure it, read it on the tire you have on there. if there is not a tire on then it should be imprinted on the rim. depends on the size of the bike but most adult bikes are either 26" or 28". but you need to look a bit more deeply than the diameter, as there are different widths available too. 700C would be common for a full size men’s bike but 650C for women’s, or smaller men’s.
But if you cant be bothered measuring it, can you be bothered putting the tire on? what if your "no bother approach" leads you to require a second purchase, after you found that the first one was wrong? Will you measure it then? or maybe go back to the shop and have another guess? Maybe you could tell the shop what color bike it is…..Ha Ha! Joking. best to read the tire that’s on there, or take the wheel off and bring it to the shop. They will do it for you.
Hope it doesn’t get too hard!!
