I was looking to get my son a bike with training wheels for his 4th birthday, and I came across these (new?) balance bikes (example images below), which have no pedals, no training wheels, and no chain. I’m tempted to buy one of these instead of a standard bike with training wheels, but I’m also talking myself out of it at the same time. Here are my thoughts:
The idea behind a balance bike is that they teach children balance before pedaling, but the downside is that the balance bike cannot be converted into a proper two-wheel bicycle, and the cost is about the same, making the balance bike nothing more than a mere novelty in my mind. And although I’m not completely familiar with the construction of either style of bicycle, as far as I can tell, any standard bicycle can have the pedals and chain removed and you’ll essentially have a balance bike, right?
The one upside to a balance bike is that it doesn’t cause a child to become training-wheel dependent. I can see my son falling into that "trap," but is that REALLY a big concern? I mean, I’ve never seen a teenager still struggling to overcome his dependence on training-wheels, have YOU?
Still… balance bikes seem to have gotten a lot of favorable reviews from parents who say "I can imagine my son or daughter being able to ride a bike in no time," but then again, there is no actual testimonial from or about a successfully transitioned, full-fledged bicyclist. Who knows if they found the transition to be any easier, especially with no basis for comparison?
Do any parents or bicycle enthusiasts out there have insights that might help me resolve this matter of bicycle vs. balance bike?

In your shoes, I’d buy a bicycle and even skip the training wheels. If you want, as you note, you can remove the pedals and you have a balance bike.. done. And you can put the pedals on when s/he wants and/or is ready.
Around our town, folks start their two year olds on balance bikes. I have a balance bike for my two year old (if you do buy one, don’t buy a wooden one.. they all break.. I don’t know a parent without a broken wooden balance bike, fixed with duct tape and new screws, etc. I’ve been very happy with the aluminum frame one we bought, a Strider – and generally they’re lighter weight than the wood ones too.) I had to get a balance bike because they don’t make "regular" bikes small enough for my daughter to ride. If they did, I would have gone right to a standard bike and taken the pedals off. I talked to many parents around town before choosing one.. all said that if your child is tall enough, just go for a regular bike and convert it to a balance bike if you want/need to.. but my girl wasn’t tall enough.

I’ve been searching for a website that does bicycle reviews, and/or makes bike suggestions. I’ve found plenty telling you the difference between cruisers, mountain bikes, and hybrids, but not to help me find anything specific, or that just has lots of info on what bikes are out there.
I know I should find a bike that fits me personaly, howeve I feel the same about cars, and I don’t go to a dealership before reading up, and getting an idea of what I want to look at.

I’m training for a long bicycle ride for charity this summer and I need a reliable long lasting mp3 player to use. I’ve never had one and know very little about them. Don’t need a ton of bells and whistles, just something basic to get me through my training and my ride! I’d also like to keep the cost down as much as possible.

If you’re interested in picking one of these bad boys up, they are pretty cheap. All the specifics can be found on the website (size, parts, etc.) You can even customize what kind of handlebars you’d like.

Does anyone know about this bicycle?

Im thinking about picking one of these up but I can’t find any reviews on it. Seems like a good deal but the parts are questionable? Can’t ask for too much at this price but I’m wondering abut the frame? Is the Motobecane on this same website worth 100.00 more? Thanks in advance!
The parts on the bike are entry level, at least in terms of the components like shifters and derailleurs. Bike frames generally don’t matter too much, especially at the low end. Aluminum is aluminum.
Make sure you check out reviews of Bikesdirect.com before you buy. I have heard of people having some serious issues with not being able to get refunds when the wrong product was sent or things broke. Also remember that you will have to pay to assemble the bike (unless you are very mechanically inclined and good with bikes), which could add another $100 or so at the bike shop.
Since there were no video reviews about this product (well there was one, but had room for improvement) on youtube, I decided to throw one up. Yes it is 10 minutes long but it is pretty thorough.
-Works with the new nano, but not the shuffle
For the average bicyclist, this is a GOOD BUY!
pros:
-Decent price @$35
-speaker outputs 15 watts. Enough sound at max volume when traveling at 15mph on a bicycle. (Sound gets lost because air pushes the sound waves back. Look up the Doppler effect)
-Weather resistant
-Solid design
-Comes with a carrying bag AND A BICYCLE MOUNT! which can also become a water bottle holder as well
-Quick release mechanism on the water bottle mount
-Good wireless range with the remote
Cons:
-Remote batteries come dead: Requires (2)CR2032 can be purchased on the auction site
-Can’t access ipod while on bike (pretty important if you are playing an album that has only a few songs).
-For use ONLY with the ipod. The system does not feature an external 3.5mm plug to connect other devices. (sorry folks, ipod fanboys only…)
-Forces you to create a playlist on your computer through itunes or else suffer from playing songs on shuffle. (It’d be funny if the song “Lady in red” suddenly popped up if you were biking with a group of friends)
-Not loud enough for bicycle mass events which requires 30 watts or greater. (my friend uses Think Outside’s Boomtube H201 which outputs 40 watts. Can be found on the auction site for $70+ once in awhile.)
