I want to sell high end road bicycles at a local bike shop or maybe online. I need to find bicycles that I can buy wholesale so that I can then retail them.

You will need a lot of expertise and collateral. Most of the really good lines are taken in big cities with potential. Each shop is given a territory by miles to operate without competition. You would need probably 3 bike lines to make a shop work.

My significant other and I do not have or want a car. We walk and take the bus when we go somewhere. However, some places are off the bus route, so we are trying to find bikes, but we are on a limited income. Does anyone know where we can find bicycles cheap?

What city are you in? You might try Craig’s List or Freecycle. Also, in my area the DAV and ARC (Thrift Stores) Have cheap bikes.

I own 2 bicycles that have 27 inch wheel sets, what am I going to do when I need a new rim, or a new tires? Both bikes have nice lugged chrome-moly steel frames, and top of the line components for their time," the 1970’s". Why did the bicycle industry change to 700cm wheels? 27inch wheels work just fine.

Dia-compe and Shimano are producing the correct length of brake calipers now, you may have to special order thru your bike shop.

Or, Rivendell carries them and provide very helpful support:

And Harris Cyclery is also a good source, they may have to order them but are very helpful via email;

I knew that bicycle messangers did modify their bicycles in special ways, but today I saw one who had removed literally everything on his bike except the front brake. It had been changed down from a ten-speed to a single speed and both derailers were gone. The chainset had two rings, but it was obviously impossible to change. The cable from the lever to the rear brake was cut and just left hanging – with no trace of the rear brake left. Why would someone strip a bicycle down like this? It just seems weird.

The bike is modified to make it conducive to the mission.

The mission includes: (1) reduce maintenance (2) reduce chance of breakdowns, (3) reduce chance of theft, (4) reduce weight of bike to only what is absolutely necessary.

Bike messengers live and die by their equipment and their equipment getting their deliveries done on time. So they want a bike than can move fast, accelerate fast, take the pounding of the road and all its problems and not break down. They also don’t want the bike to be attractive…so making it look horrificly modified and unattractive deters theft.

Chances are the mods were designed to meet one of those goals.

Edit: I think the better route for bike messengers is to "downgrade" a high-end bike. They want performance quality that you lose if you try to buy an off-the-rack bike that is not really made for high performance. You can’t upgrade pedestrian bikes for efficient messenger bikes.
