I dont want to pay $300 to bring my bike on an airplane. Where is a place that rents good quality road bikes? I will be racing in Federal Way but will be staying in Olympia.

Will cost a lot less money to ship your bike to Washington. Will cost between $100 to $150 round trip. I ship my bicycle in an Iron Case. Some bike shops will rent an Iron Case.
I really doubt you will find any place that will rent quality road bikes.
Good Luck

my friend said he went sprinting on a road bike a max of 76km/h. I’d say he only went that fast for a second. I’m 99% sure he’s BSing. but just to make sure…
What is the top speed the cyclists go in the velodrome?
What is the top speed someone on a road bike has gone?

Richard K is right. That’s top sprint speed for pros. That means most pros can’t hit that speed either, only the few fastest sprinters.

Your friend did not do this on flat ground – not even for 1 second. Most good cyclists need a tail wind and a good downhill to hit this speed. So I’m 100% sure he’s BSing you.

Is it ok to train on a mountain bike and race on a road bike or does it use different muscles?

You can train on a mtn bike but if you want to, now here are things to consider.
1) If you are training on a mtn bike on mtn bike trails you will need more recovery time.
The punishment you take on rough trails is much worse then any thing you will encounter on the road.
This is why Pro mtn bikers spend 2/3 of the time training on the road.
2) Mtn biking for training will help develop your upper body better then road riding so you might not get the neck/ shoulder soreness that a lot of road riders get early in the season.
3) The leg muscles you use are the same for both road and mtn bike riding, how well you recruit then in your pedal stoke depends mostly on how well you pedal.
4) You will need to road ride quite a bit as mtn biking can not get you into the same position to simulate being in the drops.
5) Mtn biking will help give you better bike handling skills, ever see Lance’s ride across the field in the TDF, he didn’t learn that on the road.

I want to get a decent bike now that I have the money to, but I an torn on whether to get a road/racing bike or a mountain bike. Which is better? Better yet, what are the pros and cons of both?
I don’t bike seriously, but I need something that will get me to school, to my friend’s house, everyday stuff like that. I’m not gonna race in the Tour de France or go all over the badlands…

Road Pro: Fast, great for conditioning, light, responsive
Road Con: less durable esp. wheels, limited to good roads, best used with all the extras like the right shoes, shorts, jersey, helmet, attitude LOL!

MTB Pro: Go most anywhere
MTB Con: Slow and heavier than road bike (smooth tires can make a difference)

Cross Pro: Quick and more nimble than MTB, nice for errands–ride to class, ride to store, etc. some ability to ride on dirt etc. Good choice for riding in street clothes and gear.
Cross Con: not as fast as a road bike and not as go everywhere as a MTB. sort of a compromise.

This is more of existentialist question. Are you a roadie? Are you MT Bike person. Buy the bike that suits you first. If you are a true bike enthusiast you will end up getting the other types someday.
