I would suggest buying a gently used bike from Craigslist. Read this site for inspecting used bikes: http://www.usedbicycleguide.com/

I bought a Marin mtb from craigslist years ago and have been very happy. I would skip the Raleigh brand and add Iron Horse, Gary Fisher and Kona, as well as Marin.
