If you are looking for a way to exercise without getting on the open road or into the mountains then a static exercise bike could be the answer.
Over the last few years there have been many innovations in exercise bikes. Spinning came to the fore when gyms caught onto the idea. Spinning bikes are now available for home use but that sort of defeats the object of a spinning class as your pace is led by the monitor.
Traditionally the static exercise bike had only a couple of settings to change the level of difficulty. These days there are bikes that you can move from side to side to imitate climbing and others that run on rollers so that you get the real feel of riding a bike. Your preference may well depend on what you are going to use it for.
As a basic form of exercise you can even buy a set of pedals that you use while sitting down watching the tv in the recumbent position. I have never seen the point of these really as they are the typical impulse buy that maybe get used for a week and then placed under the bec to gather dust. They can be useful for someone with an injury that requires non movement for a time.
A basic exercise bike is enough for most people’s exercise needs but without the attraction of being “sexy” it is more likely to be used as a clothes hanger rather than an exercise machine.
The latest static bikes have counters of virtually all the variables, calories, kilometres, terrain differing resistance levels etc you can even move from side to side on imaginary hills and mountains and it might well be appropriate to spend more to make sure that you feel obliged to use it. If you invest more money in something often it gets used more.
You have a couple of guarantees on buying one. If you use it you will benefit healthwise. Your resting heart rate will drop, you will have greater stamina and your resistance will increase, all good things to have. You will also get an improved quality of life. Also if you need more space in your wardrobe and don’t use the bike at least you will have a place to hang your shirts.
