What advice do you have for someone who wants to get into mountain biking?
Posted by admin in biking
I want to get into mountain biking. I have always rode atv but I want to get myself into better shape now. I need advice on getting started with a bike and what gear I should buy also. I don’t want to spend a fortune on a bike (preferably $350 or less until I get started for awhile). I will mainly be doing all offroad and trail riding.
Like it was stated in a couple of previous answers, stay away from the Wal-mart type bikes. I have learned the hard way my self, you get what you pay for when it comes to mountain bikes.
If you could bump up what you want to pay for a bike just a little bit, you could probably find yourself a decent hard tail to get started out on to see if you going to like it.
Definitely get a helmet, I know they have saved my butt a few times, or should I say my skull.
A good pair of gloves is very important also, especially if you are on a longer ride. Comfort is important.
If you going to run flat pedals, you might want to consider getting shin guards. I am speaking from experience. If you are running clip-less pedals they might not be such a big issue.
Last but not least as a bonus, get a bike computer, it is cool to keep track of you miles and times. Seeing improvement makes you want to get back out there.
I left a couple of links of some web sites just so you can check out what is available, and maybe you can find one like it used.
Gook luck with it!

Posted by admin in mountain bikes
I am just starting to get into Mountain biking and I am looking to buy a bike for a reasonable price. I want to buy something used probably off of craigslist or something like that. I am just looking to see which brands are good and which brands I should stay away from.
Look for any good name and one Mongoose is not the same as another one…stay away from dept store ANYTHING! Look for Trek, specialized, Giant, Gary Fisher, Kona, GT…..the list goes on. There are many things to look for when buying used mountain//road bikes as you never know how "honest" the seller is and how well they represent their item for sale. I suggest that since you dont know how to shop for something (to prevent you from getting screwed) you go visit your local shops first and get educated before you start looking and learn some of the ins and outs before you buy something you will regret. Even a brand name off of C-list can be a bad buy! That is a small part of the downside, you might actually score something good though….?
Does mountain biking use the same muscles as road bikes do?
Posted by admin in road bikes
Is it ok to train on a mountain bike and race on a road bike or does it use different muscles?
You can train on a mtn bike but if you want to, now here are things to consider.
1) If you are training on a mtn bike on mtn bike trails you will need more recovery time.
The punishment you take on rough trails is much worse then any thing you will encounter on the road.
This is why Pro mtn bikers spend 2/3 of the time training on the road.
2) Mtn biking for training will help develop your upper body better then road riding so you might not get the neck/ shoulder soreness that a lot of road riders get early in the season.
3) The leg muscles you use are the same for both road and mtn bike riding, how well you recruit then in your pedal stoke depends mostly on how well you pedal.
4) You will need to road ride quite a bit as mtn biking can not get you into the same position to simulate being in the drops.
5) Mtn biking will help give you better bike handling skills, ever see Lance’s ride across the field in the TDF, he didn’t learn that on the road.
Most men I’ve asked definitely prefer the women’s bikes with no crossbar. bicycles do not need to to be gendered, especially not for adults. Any reason why they still are?
women and men have different proportions in thier anatomy, thus the biggest difference for "Women Specific"designs. So a 5′8" woman and a 5′8" man are going to have different proportions in torso length, arm length, femur length, etc… And thus bikes *should* be gendered, at least they are in the upper-levels of bikes, not so in the department store level.
Several makers are making step-thru frames (or mixtes) for both men and women, as well – see: www.rivbike.com

Cyclocross Bikes – The Sport Utility Automobile You Pedal
Posted by admin in Uncategorized
Do you would like a bicycle that is certainly quicker than a mountain bicycle on street but tougher than a street bicycle? You may require a cyclocross bicycle and not even know it. Cyclocross is definitely an off street activity that runs inside the fall. The courses are on grass, mud and dirt streets with sections with barriers that the riders should dismount and operate more than. The laps have a tendency to become brief producing for any spectator friendly form of racing. Cyclocross began in Europe as an off period activity for street racers but has grown into it is personal specialty. The motorcycles which have grown out of this activity need to be quick and light but difficult with numerous traction due towards the ailments. Even in the event you do not race cyclocross, this variety of bicycle may perhaps be the ideal alternative for all circular riding.
Cyclocross motorcycles appear a whole lot like a street race bicycle till you appear closely. Whilst they’ve the drop handlebars of the street bicycle, they operate mountain bicycle cantilever or disc brakes. This signifies additional stopping energy is messy problems and far more clearance so fatter tires fit within the frame. This improved clearance also enables with the running of fenders for wet climate instruction and commuting. The frame geometry can be a tiny much more relaxed than a street bicycle so they’re stable on slippery trails. This carries more than to winter riding wherever that stability and also the room to operate studded tires make these wonderful four period motorcycles.
Cyclocross motorcycles are readily available produced from all from the well-known frame supplies such as steel, aluminum, titanium and carbon fiber. Based on what you wants to make use of the bicycle for it is possible to get quite streamlined types exclusively for racing or much more utilitarian styles which have rack and fender mounts. The cyclocross bicycle can be a jack of all trades. Place a street racing tire on and you’ll be able to go on club group rides. Place in your racks and wider tires to turn it into a commuting or touring bicycle. I create a great deal of cyclocross motorcycles for persons that in no way get raced. They use them as an all circular device that’s at house on each streets and dirt trails. More rapidly than a mountain bicycle but it is possible to take it areas a street bicycle could by no means go.
Most bicycle corporations provide cyclocross alternatives but for racing I suggest the Kuota Kross, a total carbon speed device and for all circular use you can not beat the Surly Cross Verify.
